		<description>
"How can Haringey be improved? Simply. Listen to the people."

A few months ago I went out on the streets of Tottenham with some Citizens UK volunteers to film the listening campaign on the streets. The advice on how to improve Tottenham speaks so clearly to the reasons the riots have happened.

This film was made with MyStreet / DocinaDay and the other film facilitator on set was Isis Thompson.

		<description>

My 94 year old grandfather, Ubby Cowan, will be recollecting 'the Battle of Cable Street' at this event next week... in person! It's the 75th anniversary of the event AND the forming of the International Brigade, volunteers from around the world who travelled to Spain to fight Franco. I'm showing 'No Pasaran', a film telling both stories, and 'Madrid before Hanita' is also showing. It'll be great. Book. Come. Enjoy:

As part of the Jewish Museum's 1936 Radical Roots

An evening of films documenting and responding to the anti-fascist events of 1936. The launch of Yoav Segal’s two commissioned films, The Battle of Cable Street and No Pasaran, supported by the Pears Foundation.

Followed by Eran Torbiner’s film Madrid before Hanita about volunteers from the Jewish community in British Mandate Palestine, who joined the International Brigades to fight fascism in Spain.

Meet veterans after the screening and join the Q&#38;A.

What brought us to these wars,
To this plateau beneath the night’s

Glory, revenge, or pay:
We came because our open eyes
Could see no other way...’

"A fascinating story about anti-fascism in the East End of London." Caroline Graham - Help Age International

50 word synopsis:

‘No Pasaran’ means in Spanish ‘They shall not Pass’, the saying of those who fought Franco in the Spanish Civil War. This phrase was borrowed in support for the ‘Battle of Cable Street’ against Oswald Mosley. This documentary film tells of these two events from a Jewish perspective firsthand.

250 word synopsis:

‘No Pasaran’ is Spanish for ‘They shall not Pass’, the rallying call of those who fought the fascist General Franco in the Spanish Civil War. This phrase was borrowed in support for the ‘Battle of Cable Street’ against Oswald Mosley in 1936. This documentary film tells of these two anti-fascist battles from a Jewish perspective.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the battle and the forming of the Brigade. These stories of protest, demonstration and action, in the face of prejudice, are more relevant now than ever. A new generation of campaigners is coming through. This film illustrates how, at times, one must ignore the instructions of the establishment and do what one believes to be right.

NO PASARAN continues a series of films by the filmmaker Yoav Segal about the fight against fascism in the 1930s. His previous film THE BATTLE OF CABLE STREET won the Discovery channel best HD film at DC Shorts and was officially selected to Chicago International, Palm Springs and Encounters Film Festival amongst many others.Yoav’s grandfather Ubby Cowan participated in the Battle and features in this film as does the famous journalist Sam Russell, a British volunteer fighter to Spain, who passed away in 2010.

The film asks the question - Did the British and French Governments, by banning arms and military support to those fighting Franco, miss the opportunity to stop the rise of fascism and therefore World War 2 in its tracks?

		<description>I have always had a love of documentaries and have focused on stories about anti-facism, multi-culturalism and sustainable development.

MUJU - Tunnel Vision

A film (12 mins) about the MUJU theatre group of the Tricycle theatre, a Muslim and Jewish acting group. This film focuses on their play "Tunnel Vision" which looks at prejudice and preconceptions.

MUJU are still a very active group creating thought provoking and sometimes difficult work as well as bringing people together in innovative and imaginative ways. Check them out here.

The film is dedicated to Ester Gluck.

This is a segment of the film. The full length film is lower down this page.

		<description>Here are a few more things that I wanted to show. Experiments, archived work or just personal fun things.

Here's some of my earliest animation. Frame by frame pencil 'tweened' animation. I'm still hunting for the right project to use this look and style for. The first piece is my friend Greg becoming Bristol cathedral.

Untitled from Yoav Segal on Vimeo.This is a trailer for my first short drama 'Becca'. It's a rather aggressive, stylized piece of experimental film. Lots of high contrast textural footage.

Becca trailer from Yoav Segal on Vimeo.
Having studied illustration at university I have always had a personal / professional relationship with drawing and design.

This is some of my graphic novel artwork:

		<description>Laura Marling - Needle and the Damage Done from Yoav Segal on Vimeo.
A simple performance video of Laura Marling covering Neil Young's 'Needle and the Damage done'. Shot in the studio Laura used during the recording of her Mercury nominated debut album. DOP: Toby Trackman. Editor: Edward Line.

It was a real pleasure to meet a quite incredible singer / songwriter during the recording of her debut album and then to watch the justifiable explosion that followed its release. The follow up "I speak because I can" is more confident, bolshy and sublime. Check it here.
